Do Dome Or Frame Varieties Make Better Portable Tents?

Portable tents can give you the greatest possible range of freedom in your quest to explore the great outdoors. With modern technology, the weight and bulk of a tent has come dramatically down, making the job of hiking with a tent far easier than it used to be. Although there are more vehicles on the roads than ever before, there are still people with the basic need to carry a tent on their back. The design of the typical camping tent has gone through more than one significant change in recent years.

In the past, portable tents were almost exclusively of the frame variety. These tents were usually of the same design, and there was very little variety or difference between models. The standard frame meant that people were quick to adjust to the need to carry the tent, but it still took a lot of physical effort to carry it over any great distance. Now, these frame tents are rare. They are still available, and in fact they are still being made today, but they have largely been superseded by the dome tent.

Dome tents are now usually considered to be more aesthetic than the old style of frame tent, and people find that there is more room within them. Because parts of the roof tend to be higher, they often seem more roomy even when they are fundamentally the same size. It is, however, the practical considerations which have made them more popular in the modern era. The weight of the tent when it is due to be carried is one of the primary reasons for this.

As well as being lighter, the modern dome tent structure is also easier to pack into a small area. This makes it especially useful to people who want to keep a tent in a small family vehicle. It does no harm for the hiker, either, because it creates more room in their storage sack for other items. The final advantage is that the tents are easier to erect, meaning that one person can often manage without any help. When you have been hiking for a long time and you are ready for sleep, it can be a godsend to have a tent which will be easy and quick to erect.

Because there are fewer poles with a dome tent, there are fewer parts which can come loose and get lost. The disadvantage is that a longer pole is probably easier to break, but with these flexible modern poles it is more difficult than you may think. Because dome tents are lighter, it is possible to carry a tent which will take more than one person, opening up the possibility of two people traveling together sharing the load. This can make a trip a lot more pleasant, and is a good reason for choosing dome portable tents.
